Chapter 10

“Is there anyone else who’d like to say a few words about the deceased?” Father Spears asked the enormous group of mourners who’d gathered in the church to say good-bye to Skye Peterson.

Kevin really hoped no one else had anything to say. The last half dozen people broke down, completely distraught at the loss of such a good man. Kevin couldn’t take another eulogy. He knew Skye waited back at the Farm for him, and yet the tears had threatened to surface several times. Seeing how many people loved Skye made him second-guess his plan.

Too late now.

“Mrs. Peterson would like to say something,” Father Spears announced.

Kevin exchanged glances with Wind. He shifted in the hard pew and rolled his shoulders to get the jacket to sit better. Kevin hated having to wear so many clothes. He would have come in his T-shirt and cutoffs if Skye wouldn’t have pitched such a fit. He then insisted Kevin stuff his ass into the only suit he owned.

He even had on shoes.

“How does she look?” Skye’s voice sounded through the tiny ear-bud planted in Kevin’s ear.

Kevin fidgeted and tugged at the sleeves. “Like an ex-wife.”

“Don’t worry.” Boulder’s voice followed. He’d stayed back at the Farm with Skye to keep him calm. Since he had an eerie power to pull control from others, it made the most sense to have him stay behind with Skye.

“She’s pretty,” Wind pointed out.

“Don’t get any ideas and start playing for the other team.”

Wind grinned at Boulder’s comment.

Kevin remained silent as he watched Naomi Fortner make her way up to the podium. She dressed as impeccably as her ex-husband. She had on a well-fitted black dress suit with a tasteful white lapel and a nice hat with a hint of a black veil that stopped right at her forehead, covering her dark, short hair.

But it wasn’t the outfit that held Kevin’s attention. Her eyes, large, blue, and completely sunken in, had him questioning this as just an act. She didn’t have a hint of satisfaction or even indifference in her look. No, this was a person utterly lost over Skye’s death.

A person could fake emotions all day long, but they couldn’t fake devastation. And Naomi was clearly devastated.

“My husband.” She paused as her voice cracked. She didn’t even make it through two words. Pulling a tissue up to cover her face, she broke down. “I will always love you, Skye-baby.”

Skye growled into the link. “I’ve always hated that nickname.”

A large man with olive skin and bad plugs helped her off the stage. He dressed expensively and would have done Flood proud with his designer suit and patent leather loafers.

“Skye,” she cried. She could barely walk, she sobbed so hard. Kevin swallowed hard and dropped his attention to his lap, holding his emotions in check. “I’ll love you forever.”

“No,” Skye said through the earpiece. “She’ll love me until the last check clears.”

Wind spoke up, careful to keep his voice low and lips barely moving. “Skye, you can’t see her. She’s not in it for the money.
